You know, the funny thing is, despite what the show tells me I never got the impression that Dean was the favored son. Sam's relationship with John was definitely more tumultuous, and John's fear of Sam turning evil definitely didn't help in that respect, but at least up until Dean died I had always considered him the more emotionally fucked-up one of the two.
